Overview

Mikumi National Park is often referred to as a smaller version of the Serengeti due to its open plains and abundant wildlife. Conveniently located near Dar es Salaam, it’s ideal for shorter visits or as an introduction to Tanzania’s southern circuit. Visitors can expect to see lions, elephants, giraffes, and hippos, alongside vibrant birdlife. The park’s accessibility and variety of wildlife make it a popular choice for families and first-time safari-goers.

When to visit

Game viewing is good year-round on the open Mkata Floodplain. The dry season from June to October concentrates animals near water and keeps the grass short; the wet season from November to May is green, excellent for birds and generally quiet, with only the occasional track affected by rain.

Getting there

Mikumi is the most accessible of the southern parks. It is roughly a four-hour drive from Dar es Salaam on the surfaced Tanzam Highway, which actually runs through the park, and about the same from Nyerere National Park. This makes it a realistic weekend safari from the coast or a first stop heading south.

What you'll see

The floodplain supports lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, impala, eland and large numbers of giraffe, with hippo pools near the main circuit. Over 400 bird species have been recorded. The scenery — open grassland ringed by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains — genuinely recalls the northern plains on a smaller scale.

Good to know

  • One or two days is typical, often as a short introduction before Nyerere or Ruaha.
  • Because the highway crosses the park, drive carefully and watch for wildlife on the road.
  • It is one of the better-value safari options thanks to the easy road access.
  • Good choice for families and first-time visitors.

Common questions

Common questions

How many days do I need here?

It depends on the park — the quick-facts box on this page gives a realistic minimum. Most travellers combine two or three parks into one northern-circuit trip of 5–9 days.

Can I visit this park on a day trip?

Some parks near Arusha (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha NP) work as day trips. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are better with at least one overnight inside or on the rim.

Do you arrange the park fees and permits?

Yes. Park entry fees, conservation fees and any concession fees are built into your quote and paid by us — you never queue at a gate.

What does a trip here cost?

Prices are per person and depend on season, accommodation standard and group size. Tell us your budget when you enquire and we'll build two or three options around it.
